Menu Icon Hider Support

Help with arranging your Visible and Hidden zones, changing behavior, and recovering menu bar controls.

System requirements

  • macOS 15 Sequoia or later
  • No Accessibility, Screen Recording, Input Monitoring, or Automation permission
  • Enough menu bar space for the icons you keep in the Visible zone

Set up the two zones

  1. Open Menu Icon Hider and keep the menu bar expanded during setup.
  2. Hold Command (⌘) and drag less-used menu bar icons to the Hidden side of the divider.
  3. Keep everyday icons on the Visible side with the Menu Icon Hider chevron.
  4. Click the chevron to collapse or reveal the Hidden zone.

Placement is manual. macOS does not give apps a public way to identify or move menu bar items owned by other apps. Command-dragging keeps you in control.

Behavior and shortcuts

  • Auto-Collapse hides the Hidden zone after your chosen idle delay.
  • Hover to Reveal reveals hidden icons after the pointer rests over the menu bar.
  • Global Shortcut toggles the Hidden zone from the keyboard.
  • Launch at Login starts Menu Icon Hider after you sign in.

Shortcut recording is limited to the focused recorder control and does not require Accessibility permission. If macOS or another app already uses the shortcut, choose a different one.

Recover hidden controls

Option-click the Menu Icon Hider chevron to enter Recovery Mode and reveal the Hidden zone and divider. Option-click again to return to the previous state. Reopening the app from Finder also expands its controls and opens Settings.

At launch, the app starts expanded and waits briefly before restoring the previous state, giving other menu bar apps time to finish loading.

Menu bar limitations

New menu bar items may appear inside the Hidden zone depending on their saved order. Notched displays have less available space, and a future macOS release may change the native status-item behavior Menu Icon Hider uses. If the layout looks wrong, expand the menu bar, rearrange with Command-drag, and include your macOS version when contacting support.
